Greek Odyssey 11: Chania

I don’t know what we expected but it just wasn’t this. A flood of humanity swallowed Halidon Street which ran from our hotel to the Old Venetian Harbour, maybe 700m. We sat next to the boys from Brighton celebrating Tom’s stag night. He was dressed as a baby complete with bib, bonnett and pacifier. Most were drinking from glass boots- a litre of beer! Luckily we caught up with them early. They were up for a very big night! The crowds kept swelling so we retreated to the safety and quiet of the hotel.

John chose Chania Hotel because it had so many Art Deco features and I’m a big fan. It was lovely and very well located. Breakfast at the hotel was amazing. We usually don’t like buffets but this was exceptional. It even included an a la carte menu. The location of the pool was strange. In fact it was in the restaurant. There were strict usage times. We didn’t bother.

We ventured back into the old city to explore. I have never seen so many restaurants, bars and jewellery shops! …..and they do silver. I was in heaven.

The World Cup was in its important phase and it became obvious that Chania was a favourite destination for the Norwegians as fans donned the superstar’s jersey. Haarland was everywhere. John was in a cheeky mood and approached a group of fans and called “Go Brazil!!” They got the joke. When we asked, there was general consensus that they were in with a chance but Brazil really? Then David took out Goliath!!!

Next destination Elafonissi but first bus to airport, pick up our Fiat Panda, head to Falassarna, park, get a train and head to the beach. Then….lunch!
