Greek Odyssey 8: Lekfes Kostos Kolymbitheres

Paros is a great island to explore. John had read about some art galleries in Lefkes so we set out to find them. The village is set up in the mountains in the centre of the island. Once renowned for lamb dishes it has become much more of  a tourist destination with its narrow lanes, handicraft shops and very cute cafes and retail shops. We did find one of the art galleries. Her portrait work was astounding so too were her prices.

We had a coffee and later lunch. I found a dress that I liked but it needed a small adjustment, which at home would have cost me the price of the dress. The woman was just lovely and said she would have it ready in an hour. Normally the retailer would expect payment before going ahead and adjusting an item but I felt this mutual trust. It was so lovely.

The following day our explorations continued. Parian marble is a fine-grained semi-translucent pure white flawless marble highly prised during the classical Greek period. The Venus de Milo is an exceptionally example of its use. We decided to seek out the shop John found on the internet. The internet can be very misleading.

Into the wilds we travelled guided by google maps to Traditional Marble of Paros.

‘We’ve been here before, John.’

‘No the internet showed a shop.’

It was a rustic workshop in the middle of nowhere. I followed the sound of a power tool emanating from the cloud of white powder in the tiny shed surrounded by an assortment of marble slabs. He emerged. I never found out his name but I remembered him well and the photo John took of the pair of us years ago. Google translate enabled me to communicate our last meeting. He was very chuffed. He mines the marble and while showing no skill as a sculptor, he obviously enjoys his life choice. Of course we bought a couple of items as a small contribution to his lifestyle.

It was time for a bite to eat and a swim. We headed to Kolumbithries, a favourite beach close to Naousa. We revisited the taverna, ate wonderful food and were treated to icy beers.
